Midnight on the Tundra Richardson Mountains, Yukon, Canada |

This panorama was taken at precisely midnight (local non-daylight time) just a week after the summer solstice. At this latitude, slightly north of the Arctic Circle, the sun does not set for a week or two either side of the solstice -- it just circles the sky from due south (at noon) to due north (at midnight). From this vantage point the Richardson Mountains to the north blocked a direct view of the midnight sun, but it remained light enough to read, and drive, all night. This panorama was taken very quickly, because the mosquitoes were exceptionally bad (actually visible in the original, unretouched photographs). Next: Flat Tire |
