The Gump Research Station, located on the west shore of Cook's Bay on the island of Mo'orea, is administered by the Berkeley campus of the University of California. My trip there, in November 1996, was specifically to set up a computer laboratory for use by classes and researchers using the station.
The large building is the dormitory, with a kitchen, livingroom and laundry facilities. It also contains a small lab with microscopes and computers. The smaller building on the waterfront is the wet lab, with saltwater tanks, equipment storage, and support for scuba divers. High above on the hill is the manager's house, with a sweeping view over Cook's Bay, and an attached guest house. A bungalow, for additional researcher housing, was under construction.
Station manager Frank Murphy is seen here with his daughter Kohina.
Mount Rotui towers directly above the station, and other spectacular peaks ring the head of the bay. Hotels are scattered along the far shore, along with restaurants and shops. Club Bali Hai, with its famous waterfront bar is furthest inland, just before the village of Pao Pao. The cruise ship Club Med II, a high-tech computerized sailing ship, is anchored in the middle of the bay.
