Virtual Guidebook to Lake Tahoe, Northern Sierra, and the Gold Country
Feather River Highway
Plumas National Forest California

The North Fork of the Feather River provides the main transportation corridor across the far northern Sierra. Despite damage by mining, recurrent floods, and both road and railroad construction, it remains a highly scenic route.

The Western Pacific Railroad's California Zephyr service from Chicago to Oakland featured the Feather River Route. Today rail buffs appreciate the bridges, tunnels, viaducts, and 360-degree loop along this route, plus the Western Pacific museum in Portola.
