Highway 50 over Echo Summit
between Placerville and South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado National Forest California

The original Lincoln Highway in 1913 crossed the Sierra at Echo Summit, elevation 7,382 feet (2,250 meters), the route now taken by Highway 50. This was one of the emigrant trails of the 1840's and 50's, with a stretch near Lovers Leap where wagons had to emptied and lowered down the bedrock slope with ropes.
