Recurrent winter and spring floods on the Sacramento River led to construction of levees and bypasses to protect both farms and towns. The most visible is the Yolo Bypass, which takes water out of the river upstream from Sacramento and allows it to flow shallow but miles-wide into the delta near Rio Vista. Interstate 80 and the railroad cross the bypass on long causeways.
