Large areas in the lowest central portion of the Sacramento Valley have been preserved as habitat for migratory birds. The Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge, one of five in the area, provides seasonal wetlands, open water, and grasslands to support birds migrating on the Pacific Flyway. Although over 200 species of birds are seen here, it is the huge numbers of ducks, geese, and swans found here in winter that draw birders.
