The Howland Hill Road runs through some exceptionally fine old growth redwood forest on Mill Creek in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. Unpaved and narrow, this road has scarcely changed since tourists to the redwoods traveled in horse-drawn buggies.
The Boy Scout Tree trail heads north from Howland Hill Road through some of the very finest redwood forest. Be sure to allow time to walk at least the first mile of this trail. Several of the tallest trees known have been discovered here, but nobody will tell you exactly where they are.
