Battery Point Lighthouse guards the entrance to the harbor at Crescent City. It stands on a small island, cut off at the highest tides.
The lighthouse was built in response to the wreck of the Brother Jonathan steamer in 1865 with the loss of 244 lives and a large quantity of gold. Gravestones of some of those lost in the wreck can be seen in a small city park nearby.
