Redwood Highway in Mendocino County California
My favorite two "tourist traps" on the old Redwood Highway are both at the south end of the South Fork Eel River canyon near Leggett. And both feature actual living redwoods, remarkable specimens despite the hoopla.
The Tree House is a fire-hollowed redwood in good health, modified with windows, doors, and a floor to make "the tallest one room building in the world" according to Ripleys Beleive It or Not.
Off the main highway at Hollow Tree Road is a small private grove featuring the Chandelier Tree. This is one of three "drive-through" trees along th Redwood Highway, and by far the best. If you really must have a picture of your car inside a massive tree, this is the place.
