Eureka is both the commercial and cultural capital of the north coast. The downtown area is distinguished by its fine old buildings and a lively cultural scene.
Fort Humboldt was the original settlement here, an army base set up to combat short-lived Indian troubles. It is now an historical park with a fine set up exhibits on the timber industry.
