Whiskeytown Reservoir
Whiskeytown Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area California

What a classic name for a rip-roaring gold rush camp - Whiskeytown! But it exists no more, drowned under the waters of the reservoir.

There is an interesting detail of the state's plumbing system here. Whiskeytown's water drains into the Sacramento River, heading south to the San Joaquin Valley and Southern California. But the water doesn't originate in the Sacramento watershed - it is diverted through a long tunnel from the Trinity River, which would otherwise run into the Klamath and out to the north coast.
