Virtual Guidebook to Mount Shasta and Klamath-Trinity Mountains
Sacramento River Canyon
Shasta County California

This is a classic travel corridor, the only reasonably easy way through the mountains from the Sacramento Valley north into Oregon.

Indian trails were followed by the Siskiyou Trail, replaced by a wagon road, then the single-track railroad, with many tunnels and bridges. Old Highway 99 countered mostly upslope from the tracks, connecting fishing camps, summer cabins, logging and mining camps.

Interstate 5 has been rammed through this rugged country using massive cuts and fillls with almost continuous curves and grades. In many places the old highway, the railroad, and the interstate run parallel to each other and the river.
