Iron Gate Dam on the Klamath River
Siskiyou County California

This stretch of the Klamath River, around behind Mount Shasta, is little known except to the locals. It is valued for its recreation lakes with good fishing and shoreline camping.

It is, however, the focus of major controversy. A proposal to remove three power generation dams has now been approved, with work to begin by 2018. When the dams are gone the Klamath will run free for its entire 263 mile length, and perhaps regain its original rich salmon and steelhead fisheries.
