The barn-like visitor center at Bear Valley Ranch provides useful information, issues backpack permits, and has some excellent natural history displays. There are picnic tables under the big fir trees and a large parking lot for hikers, plus a staging area for horseback riders.
Nearby is the Morgan Horse Farm, where ranger patrol horses are raised and trained, and the Earthquake Trail which follows and interprets the San Andreas Fault. A short distance in the other direction is Kule Loklo, a recreation of a Coast Miwok Indian village.
