Virtual Guidebook to Northern and Central Nevada
Schell Creek Range
near Ely Nevada

Nevada's characteristic "basin and range" topography is especially grand here between Ely and the Utah state line. A few tokens of mining past and present are all that break the immensity of the sagebrush valleys and pinyon pine covered ranges.

The Ward charcoal ovens date from a brief silver mining boom in the 1870's. Adjacent Willow Creek Campground is one of my perennial favorites, with a great view across Steptoe Valley.
