This is a fascinating volcanic field with cinder cones, explosion craters, and lava flows. It is located midway between Ely and Tonopah, a remote location but right next to the paved highway. A good unpaved road loops through the field.
The Lunar Crater itself, 430 feet deep, is a "maar", a volcanic steam exposion crater. This is wonderful wild country with tremendous views all around, a great place to hike and camp if you love wide open spaces.
