Virtual Guidebook to Northern and Central Nevada
Forty Mile Desert and Lovelock
on Interstate 80 Nevada

The California Trail followed the Humboldt River aross most of Nevada, to its bitter end in the Humboldt Sink west of Lovelock. Here the track split, with one branch running south to connect with the Carson River, the other heading west to the bend of the Truckee River. Both routes had to contend with a gap known as the Forty Mile Desert. What little water could be found in this area tended to be sulfurous and sometimes boiling hot.
