Battle Mountain
on the Humboldt River and Interstate 80 Nevada

Battle Mountain today is the center of a huge gold mining belt, heap-leach mines that literally move mountains. Other than that there are widely soaced ranches in the sagebrush desert, and small patches of greenery along the river.

Emigrants on the California Trail trudged through here, closely following the Humboldt River, which provided relaible (though not very palatable) water, and grazing for their stock. West of Carlin the railroad squeezed through Palisade Canyon, bypassed by both the California Trail and Interstate 80.
