Nevada, the Silver State, was founded on mining but is now better known for gambling and entertainment. Las Vegas is the fastest growing city in the nation with new casinos and hotels appearing constantly; Reno in the north is a smaller version with Lake Tahoe nearby.
But the true soul of Nevada is found in the vast spaces between: the basin and range, ranchland and desert, the loneliest road and the historic mining towns.
I have divided Nevada into two guidebooks, one for Northern and Central Nevada, which includes Reno and Tahoe, the Basin and Range country, and the Loneliest Road in America; the other for Las Vegas and Southern Nevada, lower and hotter with red rocks and the Colorado River.
