On my first trip to the Arctic I never saw the midnight sun — it was cloudy for the three nights I was north of the line. But it was still light all night long. The day I camped at Rock River Territorial Park, I set my alarm for midnight, and drove north a few miles to go hiking across the tundra. It was a beautiful experience — limitless open space,

no-one else around, a profound silence. Unfortunately, the mosquitoes stay up all night, and they were terrible.
