Inuvik Airport
Inuvik, Northwest Territories, Canada

It is quite amazing to drive so far out through the wilderness and then come upon a modern airport. Inuvik has a large airport with scheduled service south to Whitehorse, Yellowknife, and Edmonton — jets even! It serves as the air travel hub for the whole western Arctic region, with flights to tiny places such as Old Crow, Aklavik, Tuktoyaktuk, and Fort MacPherson. There are also numerous charter companies available for flightseeing and to get to remote hunting and fishing spots. It was here that we chartered a nine-passenger plane for the 25-minute hop to Tuktoyaktuk, to complete our Arctic quest. Inuvik owes its large airport partly to the presence of a Canada Forces military base here until 1986.

Notice the orange electric outlets provided for each parking place. In the winter it is necessary to plug your car in when it is standing idle, if you ever want to start it again. The electricity goes to engine block and oil pan heaters permanently installed in every car in the north.
