The east edge of the Mackenzie River Delta is marked by a long ridge, the Campbell escarpment, paralleled by Campbell Lake. This is the first solid ground encountered in over a hundred miles along the Dempster Highway. To make a permanent road over permafrost it is necessary to build it up on a thick layer of dry gravel. Gravel pits are thus encountered regularly along the length of the Dempster. There is one on the ridge the panorama was taken , and another visible below on a side road next to Campbell Lake.
