The Dempster Highway
Mackenzie River Delta, Northwest Territories, Canada

 -

The Dempster Highway runs through the flat country of the Mackenzie River Delta in a series of long straight stretches, one of them 13 miles long. The country is rather monotonous, muskeg forest with the occasional stream or pond. The road itself is built up on a gravel berm at least ten feet high, in some areas higher, so the penalty for falling asleep at the wheel is pretty severe. There are no habitations in the 78 miles between Fort MacPherson and Inuvik, and almost no signs of man's presence, except for the road and gravel pits, and three picnic areas.
