Virtual Guidebook to The City of San Francisco
Ocean Beach
San Francisco California

Almost the entire western shore of San Francisco consists of this long beach backed by low sand dunes. Directly exposed to the broad Pacific it remains a wild place with heavy surf and constant winds. The dunes once spread far inland, but have now been tamed by Golden Gate Park and paved over as the Richmond and Sunset Districts.

Fort Funston, now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, was originally a key part of San Francisco's coastal defenses, with heavy artillery emplacements and later a Nike missile base.
