Posts Summit and Nepenthe
south of Big Sur California

At the south end of the Big Sur Valley Highway One rises gradually to a thousand foot high summit at Posts. Despite the rather remote location there are two famous hotels here, the Ventana Inn and the Post Ranch Inn. The road then descends south around a few curves to Nepenthe, a restaurant with a view and a history. Next come the Hawthorne Gallery, Henry Miller Memorial Library, Deetjen's Big Sur Inn, and the Coast Gallery. Along with the mile-long stretch of business along the Big Sur River this is the main commercial area of the Big Sur coast.

The highway reaches its highest point, 954 feet (290 meters) at Grimes Point. The A-frame house perched on the knife edge ridge here, named "Wild Bird", was the retreat of architect Nathaniel Owings and his conservationist wife Margaret. This is also the most reliable place to see re-introduced California condors, the world's largest flying bird.
