Secularization of the California missions generally resulted in their lands being taken over by a local landowner. One such property ended up as Carmel Mission Ranch. When condo developers threatened to build all over it and dredge the mouth of the river for a yacht harbor, local hero and Carmel mayor Clint Eastwood stepped in and bought the ranch. Now it is a low key but sophisticated restaurant and hotel.
A round of discrete applause for Inspector Callahan, please.
