Virtual Guidebook to El Camino Real
Arroyo Seco
west of Greenfield, Los Padres National Forest California

Hardly anyone seems to know about this spectacular canyon on the inland side of the Santa Lucia Mountains. The drive up from the Salinas Valley passes neat vineyards and increasingly high hills, until it narrows to a dramatic canyon between towering mountains. On summer weekends people from the Salinas Valley congregate at the river pools.

From Arroyo Seco one can drive a steep winding road up over a summit and down to Carmel Valley and the coast. A much more dramatic road leads through the heart of the mountains to Indians, but unfortunately it has been closed for years.
