Virtual Guidebook to Big Sur
The Rocky Beach at Kirk Creek
Below Kirk Creek Campground, Monterey County, California

Beaches on the Big Sur coast tend to be small and rocky, with dangerous heavy surf. Below Kirk Creek Campground is a typical example. The south end of this beach is sandy, in the summer at least, but the north end is a jumble of jagged rocks. It all depends on what you want from a beach. Personally, I enjoy the complexity of a beach broken up by rocky outcrops, the dramatic crashing of the waves, and the teeming life of the intertidal zone among the rocks.
