Telegraph Creek was the midpoint of the Yukon telegraph line, a route that ran through unbroken wilderness for 610 miles, from Hazelton to Atlin. A small portion of the Klondike stampeders used this interior route to the goldfields, coming up the river from Wrangell, then heading overland to Whitehorse on the Yukon. In fact, it really wasn't until the building of the Alaska Highway in the 1940's that there was any better land route to the north than the Telegraph Trail, arduous though it must have been. Callbreaths Pioneer Outfitters dates from that period. Though no longer in business, the building still stands, and Callbreaths still live in town. This is on the main road into town. Most of the houses are boarded up. Next: Saint Aidan's Church |
