Virtual Guidebook to Northern British Columbia
The Grand Canyon of the Stikine River
East of Telegraph Creek, British Columbia, Canada

 -

The Stikine is one of North America's wildest rivers. No dams or diversions, only one bridge across it, and the biggest town in its entire watershed is Telegraph Creek. It begins on the Spatzizi Plateau and ends on the Alaskan coast near Wrangell — neither end can be reached by road.

Upstream from Telegraph Creek the Stikine River has carved a narrow and deep canyon. At its most extreme it is said to be almost a thousand feet deep, and in places it is less than a hundred feet between the bases of the cliffs. There are a number of good viewpoints along the road between Tahltan and Telegraph Creek.
