The Old Firehouse, Now a Museum
Sixth and Columbia Streets, Stewart, British Columbia, Canada

Stewart, British Columbia, is a town of from one to two thousand people, depending on the status of the local mines. It was founded in 1902, and although it is a port shipping forest products and home base for a small fishing fleet, its fortunes have waxed and waned with those of the gold, silver, and copper mines in the surrounding mountains. Its population peaked at over 10,000 in 1910, and bottomed out ten years later at about 20. Stewart's old firehouse (1910) has been converted into a museum of local history, specializing in mining.

The Stewart-Hyder area has magnificent scenery, and deserves more visitors. But it is a long way off the beaten track — a full days drive from Prince Rupert or Prince George, and bypassed by the Inside Passage cruises and ferries.
