Virtual Guidebook to Northern British Columbia
The View from Stone Mountain
Summit Lake Provincial Park, British Columbia, Canada

 -

The Alaska Highway crosses the continental divide several times, but elsewhere it is in flat, forested country. It is only here, at Summit Lake, that it is dramatic. This is the highest point on the highway, 4250 feet, with 7400 foot Mount Saint George towering above it. To the south a rough unpaved road leads up Stone Mountain to a microwave tower and trailhead. Summit Lake itself is far below, with the Alaska Highway visible as a series of whitish road cuts on the far side of the valley.

The sign says "What a View!", and it is, when you can see anything at all. The first time I made the trip up Stone Mountain was in a dense and very cold cloud, with visibility about twenty feet. Suddenly I was in the middle of a small herd of caribou, who looked as startled as I was.
