Racing River comes down from some beautiful glaciated peaks in the Stone Range, and has the distinctive milky color of a river carrying rock flour from glacial sources. The best view is from right in the middle of the bridge. When looking for a good spot for a panorama I am often drawn to bridges. They get me out in the open, usually with a good view up and down a river corridor. Sometimes the bridge itself is interesting. This one was more than interesting it was somewhere between exciting and terrifying. It was very early morning on the Alaska Highway, hardly any traffic, beautiful clear sunlight. My first problem was that the bridge deck was an open steel grillwork, and my tripod legs tended to slip through. Just as I got set up and started to take my photographs, a huge motorhome came barreling down on me. I was stuck, in the middle of my panorama with my tripod literally plugged into the bridge deck. I waved at the RV to make sure they saw me. They waved back and thundered past without slowing down. The bridge bounced and vibrated. Then another RV came from behind me I didn't see or hear it until it hit the bridge deck and I felt the buzzing rumble. Then a third, also very fast and close. I snapped my last shot, yanked up my tripod and ran for safety. The perils of panography. Next: Kinuseo Falls |
