Meziadin Lake is a convenient stopping place at the junction between the Cassiar Highway (north to the Yukon) and the road west to Stewart and Hyder. It is a beautiful spot, a deep blue lake with brilliant green mountain slopes streaked with avalanche chutes. Moose are frequently seen here, and sometimes swim out to the island. Meziadin is known for its bears, both grizzly and black. They come for the salmon, which spawn in the lake. BC Parks is anxious to keep them from becoming a problem in the campground, and seem to be successful. Bears pass close by every night, but I have never seen one in the camp. There is a jumbo-size bear trap standing ready, and the garbage cans are inside a concrete block building with steel doors. Campground regulations require you to pour dirty dishwater into the pit toilets instead of throwing it on the ground. Most people are insulated from the bear problem (as well as rain and mosquitoes) because they are in massive motorhomes. We were the only ones at Meziadin camping in tents. The campground host said she thought we were "awfully brave". Next: Bear River |
