Hyder calls itself the "grizzly bear capital of Alaska". That claim to fame is largely based on this little stream, Fish Creek, and the raised platform one of the best places in the world to watch bears scooping salmon out of the water. There are other famous bear watching spots in Alaska, and some of them charge admission and place lots of restrictions on users. One even has a lottery for who gets to watch! But here on the Salmon River it is free and easy, just drive up and park. Unfortunately we were there in June, and there are no salmon (or bears) until late July. |
